What an honor to share space with one of my heroes, Fr. Greg Boyle, Founder of Homeboy Industries, at the Center for Action and Contemplation’s ReVision Conference!

Fr. Greg has spent his life devoted to creating places of cherished belonging for those living on the margins. His message to us at the conference was, “hold out for mystical activism.”

What does it mean for you and me to live our ordinary lives in mystical activism? St. Ignatius talked about it as standing in awe of the suffering and hardship others have to carry. And recognizing that our woundedness is the common ground of our belonging.

I believe the mystic’s quest is also to find places where the Divine meets the soul with no space in between. We may find this in small, everyday moments – a child’s laughter, the smell of rain in the desert, a sunset that takes our breath away. Times when we are keenly aware of our unique and sacred place in the web of life – when we intuitively sense our connection with other living things. Perhaps it’s simply being deeply present with another person.

Fr. Greg’s call to each of us is to act with greater awareness of our belonging. And to bring love to all those places we inhabit, welcoming and offering our kinship with others so no one stands outside the circle of our compassion. Yes, and amen!

There are stories within each of us that speak to the difficult road we have travelled and the meaning we have made from our experiences. In the half-day Legacy Workshops I have given throughout the pandemic years, I have heard time and again how fragile life has felt, and how important the workshops have been in giving people a safe and trusting space to talk with kindred spirits about the disarray in our collective lives and how we’re find meaning and joy. The common theme has been, “we need more time together!”, and I promised I would make that happen.

As if fate was a co-conspirator, two amazingly talented friends who have followed the Legacy Workshop from its inception six years ago nudged me ahead with their promise to join the new venture. Together, we created a full-day retreat that adds a lovely complement of meditative experiences to our guided reflections on life and legacy. Our full-day retreat offers participants the luxury of slowing down and taking the time to be truly mindful. Mindful in how we listen, taste and smell; mindful of how gentle movement can free our bodies to support the opening of our hearts and minds; mindful of the beauty to be seen all around us.

As we gather in a lovely, soothing environment, Kelly Emme will guide us through very gentle, intentional movements to relax our bodies and help us breathe a little deeper. She’ll create soothing sounds using crystal and metal singing bowls, drums, and chimes to help us tune in to the nuances of our listening. We’ll use our lunch time together to discover the pleasures of mindful eating. From this place of mindfulness, we can begin to see what is inside us waiting to be shared, and to understand how we can form a more a peaceful, tranquil life.

On the practical side of life and legacy, Alanna Mack will guide us in thinking about the challenges that can arise in the later years of life and making our wishes known to others – what it means to make the ultimate gift of peace.

We lovingly named our expanded Legacy Workshop experience, “Your Story, Your Legacy Retreat: A Full Sensory Exploration”. In our sessions together participants will receive gentle guidance to:

If you’re like me, you’re probably missing the old familiar ways of being with others and doing the things that have given your life meaning and purpose. In the chaos of it all, it can be really difficult to find our spiritual and emotional bearings.

The transition into a new year is always an invitation to hope for new possibilities. Can we find the space in our cloistered lives now to let grace settle in and light a new path? Perhaps discover something inside just waiting to emerge? If you’re wondering how to take the first step, the Legacy Workshop may open the door for you. The workshop will engage you in reflecting, writing, and sharing stories of how you came to be who you are and exploring what more might await you.

Participants have come away from the workshop with a clearer sense of self and purpose, and less stress about the future. They have gained a deeper understanding of what matters most to them, including relationships. The have learned the importance of having conversions with loved ones about the legacy they want to pass on and their wishes for care through the end of life.

My hope is that this will be a year of healing and transformation for all of us, and our eyes will open to new pathways and possibilities. The Legacy Workshop is a great place to start, and is now being offered online so you can participate from the comfort and safety of your own home or office. People who’ve already attended the online Legacy Workshop are saying, “It took my breath away”; “I felt totally renewed, like having a spa day”; “It was just the therapy I needed to make sense of all the changes in my life”.

Are you ready for renewal? Join me for the next online Legacy Workshop.

The striking awareness that we are not in control of everything in our lives – that the future is not ours to write – is no doubt unsettling, but can also be transformative. A crisis can call out a greater sense of purpose, and sometimes lead us to renew social connections we have neglected in the hurly burly of our daily lives. Zaki suggests that instead of asking how we will recover from these painful times we should ask how we will be changed by them.

Studies show that people who have faced trauma are more likely to experience positive effects when they have a supportive community with which they can openly share experiences. Organizations can foster that sense of community by giving employees a safe space to talk about their struggles and what matters most to them. In our experience with the Legacy Workshop, convening conversations in the workplace around life’s difficult passages and what gives meaning to our lives is a powerful way to promote growth and resilience. We are seeing people face challenges with greater strength and resolve when they talk about what’s important to them and feel supported in the decisions they make. The Legacy Workshop gives people that safe and trusting space to reflect and write about the values and experiences that have defined their lives, how the pandemic is influencing their sense of purpose, and what they want to leave behind as their legacy to others.

In the Legacy Workshop, people are sharing their stories and connecting with others in a way that is affirming, encouraging and healing. The experience is not about changing the things that have been painful in our lives, but discovering how we can heal and be transformed by them. It is a wonderful remedy for the chaos and distress that circles our lives these days. Our sense of purpose has been turned upside down. We question whether the things we have given our lives to doing are still important. Has the pandemic changed our image of who we want to become?

One silver lining in this pandemic is the slower pace that has been imposed on us by staying at home and limiting our activity and exposure. There is grace to be found in the stillness. It invites us to reflect on where we are in our lives, what is now giving us meaning and joy, and whether we are on the path to becoming the best of ourselves or need a different direction.

In March of 2020, when the magnitude of COVID-19 was becoming apparent and employers were shifting into survival mode, my contract work with a non-profit organization came to an early end. It was work that added great value to my life and my sense of worth to others. It was home base for friendships I treasured. But it was out of my control. It was the first of many challenges, I soon discovered, that would call for a whole different way of thinking about my place in the world. It was some consolation that I was not alone. Most human beings were having their own version of the same experience.

My concern about how friends and colleagues were coping prompted me to start making phone calls. “How are you doing?” “Is there anything you need?” “How can I help?” “Don’t ever forget I care and I’m here for you.” These were the typical conversation lines that led to a rich sharing of experience and feelings. One thing became clear to me: as our worlds closed in, we became much more focused on the meaning of our lives and how we had been spending our time. We questioned whether all of that would change. I was surprised to hear how many people felt open to the inevitability of change, and the possibilities for rewriting their life story.

In a recent series of articles, Michael F. Steger wrote that “To survive the pandemic … we need to make meaning of it. Simply enduring, or trying to stay resilient, might not be enough to prepare us for the repair that our changing world will need. By making meaning, we practice the skills we will use to lay the groundwork for a good life, even as the world changes around us.”

As sad as I was to say goodbye to work and relationships I so enjoyed, a window of opportunity opened for me. I created the Legacy Workshop three years ago and have presented it live to hundreds of people. We learned from the workshops that people became stronger in facing life challenges when they were able to talk with others about what’s important to them and feel supported in the decisions they needed to make. Sharing their life stories in the safe and trusting environment of the Legacy Workshop was giving participants a deeper understanding of what mattered most in their lives, how they wanted to be remembered, and the kind of legacy they wanted to leave.

When the pandemic made in-person presentations impossible, the feedback we were getting from people made it seem imperative that we find a way to continue the workshops. The Legacy Workshop was just the therapy people were looking for to help make sense of all the changes they were facing.

Going out on a limb, I created a virtual edition of the Legacy Workshop, and prayed it would be as engaging and effective for people as the live experience of the workshop. “It took my breath away”, said one participant. “I felt totally renewed, like having a spa day”, said another. Most importantly, in the workshops people are finding empathy in the company of others (albeit virtually), affirmation of values, and the courage to see their life’s purpose through a different lens.

Michael Steger was right in saying our world is changing, and endurance and resilience will not be enough to prepare us for what’s to come. Stepping away to explore the meaning of our lives and the purpose for which we are here – through experiences like the Legacy Workshop – I believe we will find the qualities we need to be stronger, wiser and truer. And, ready for change.
